Security Firm Discovers Hackers Use Google and Microsoft to Steal Crypto

Online security company NetSkope has discovered a new crypto phishing scam that utilises Google and Microsoft Azure to trick users into handing over their information. The tactic involves using SEO techniques to distribute links to copycat pages.

NetSkope has made a new phishing scheme discovery.

Other Big Names Not Immune

It’s been discovered that hackers have improved their strategies and are utilising specific SEO techniques to increase interaction with phishing sites for imposter wallet apps and exchanges impersonating notable names such as MetaMask and CoinBase.

These phishing sites are often built on Google Sites or Microsoft Azure and can take a user’s info in two ways. They will either acquire the private seeds of the user’s wallet by prompting data importation, or will pilfer info from the accounts of the exchanges being impersonated using error messages:

In this campaign, we found that the attackers are abusing Google Sites and Azure Web App to host the pages, likely due to cost, ease-of-use, and to slightly increase the victim’s trust.

NetSkope has strongly recommended that “users never enter credentials after clicking on a link” and instead navigate directly to the site they wish to use, and that organisations should employ secure web gateways that can block these types of attacks.

Security Firms Have Their Work Cut Out

With crypto theft an ongoing concern on the radars of most investors and regulators, luckily security firms are keeping a watchful eye out. At the beginning of April, global cybersecurity firm ESET uncovered a criminal plot to steal users’ digital assets via apps impersonating popular cryptocurrency wallets. The plot involved more than 40 copycat crypto wallet sites intended to promote downloads of malicious apps.

Earlier in the year, blockchain security firm CertiK identified a US$10 million rug pull on Arbix Finance. The firm warned users who had engaged with the protocol to avoid it, along with its ARBX token. CertiK allegedly found several red flags in Arbix via its Skytrace tool, which analyses fraud risk.

Minecraft Goes Web3 with Polygon-Based ‘NFT Worlds’

Microsoft’s hugely popular Sandbox game, Minecraft, is going Web3. ‘NFT Worlds’ is a blockchain layer that will be added to third-party Minecraft servers accompanied by a Polygon-based overlay, with the Ethereum sidechain set to offer gas-free transactions.

Minecraft Adds a Blockchain Layer

Minecraft seems to be the answer Web3 builders have been searching for, and the announcement of NFT Worlds is generating a lot of hype on social media. The 2011 smash-hit video game has remained widely relevant since its release, and the announcement of the move to Web3 will only heighten interest:

NFT Worlds will permit players to experience the metaverse within an existing game. The NFTs Minecraft is set to add will come in the form of land, similarly to metaverse-specific games like The Sandbox. Users who purchase an NFT will be given a world seed – a unique code that generates a specific landscape. Essentially, this will enable users to purchase their own server.

Beyond this, NFT Worlds will provide players with other Web3 features, including an online shop selling items to enhance gameplay. The current floor price for a Minecraft seed is US$45,000 and the $WRLD token will be used for any in-game purchases.

Microsoft Embraces Crypto and the Metaverse

Mid-2021 saw Microsoft introduce NFTs to Minecraft with the backing of an Enjin wallet. The project permits players to collect in-game digital assets granting players access to a range of special quests and benefits. This venture was followed by Microsoft’s move to purchase prominent gaming company Activision Blizzard. The US$69 million acquisition is a continuation of Microsoft’s metaverse plans.

Australian Ranch Awarded Blockchain-based Soil Carbon Credits from Microsoft

Major tech giant Microsoft recently announced ambitious plans to cut down on its carbon footprint and implement 100 percent renewable energy at its data centers by 2025.  Furthermore, the company plans to incentivize its suppliers to reduce their carbon footprint by rewarding certain sustainability projects like reforestation, soil sequestration, and bioenergy with carbon capture storage (BECC).

Soil sequestration is the process of increasing the amount of carbon dioxide stored in soil, thereby reducing the amount present within the atmosphere. To do so, cattle ranchers implement special grazing practices with the hope of achieving between a 4 and 6 percent concentration of soil organic carbon in their land.

The environmental regeneration project, Regen Network, built on the Cosmos (ATOM) blockchain, was designed to reward farmers that increase the carbon concentration in their soil. It does so by verifying a farm’s soil sequestration and issuing it tokens, known as CarbonPlus Grasslands credits, funded by corporations that wish to reduce their carbon footprint. Microsoft has partnered with the Regen Network to purchase 43,338 metric tons worth of carbon credits for the Wilmot Cattle Co, an Australian-based ranch owner. The initiative was originally launched by natural capital firm Impact AG and has now been bought by Microsoft.

In addition to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting companies that do the same, Microsoft also hopes to eliminate an equal amount of carbon that it’s been responsible for producing since the company began in 1975. The corporation has set a date of 2050 to achieve this goal, using a combination of negative emission technologies (NET) like BECCs, direct air capture (DAC), and other methods.

Tech Giants Call for Climate Change Action

Microsoft is not the only tech giant calling for more aggressive climate change action.

Elon Musk, CEO of fellow tech giant Tesla, famously announced a $100 million prize to whoever could provide the best carbon capture technology. The often controversial businessman has been a long time supporter of climate change action, environmental causes, and blockchain technology.

Last week, Musk finally made clear his support for Bitcoin when he changed his Twitter profile to the hashtag #Bitcoin. He followed up the change with the tweet “In retrospect, it was inevitable,” appearing to confirm the widespread belief that he would one day buy Bitcoin. Immediately following the news the digital asset enjoyed a brief 20 percent rise in price, touching the $38,000 level. However, it quickly corrected back down to current levels, indicating strong bearish sentiment within crypto markets.
